Known Mechanical & Optical Gotchas
- Chassis Extension Requirement (800mm Tubes): Installing an 800mm 50W tube into a standard 700mm K40 enclosure requires removing the right-side sheet metal punch-out cover and bolting on an external chassis extension case. Operating the tube without an extension leaves live 19,000V DC exposed to touch.
- Digital Percentage Panel Misleading Current: The stock K40 digital percentage control panel (0–99%) does NOT correspond linearly to milliamperage. Setting the panel to "70%" can push over 22 mA through the tube, destroying the optical mirrors in less than 20 hours. Always tune laser power using a physical analog milliammeter set to ≤15.5 mA.
- Water Bubble Traps in Output Coupler: When filling the cooling loop, tilt the tube so the water exit nozzle points straight up. Any trapped air bubble around the front output coupler mirror creates local thermal shock, causing the glass to shatter within 60 seconds of firing.
